Happy May Day!

May Day Mood Board from

Happy May everyone! Did you know that this first day of May has had a long and notable history as one of the world’s principle holidays?  Although, not highly recognized in the United States or Canada, May 1 has been a day of celebration that dates back thousands of years to pre-Christian times. With its Celtic roots, it is linked to the pagan celebration called Beltane which means “day of fire” and was intended to mark the coming of summer and fertility. As the holiday evolved, common rituals of the festival included the cutting down of trees to make the maypole, creating garlands for the children, folk dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. Today, it is a major bank holiday in many countries and is commonly observed as “Labor Day” or “International Workers Day”.  So, whether or not you have the day off, we can all celebrate what makes May so special – flowers blooming, warmer weather, the last days of school and don’t forget, Mother’s Day!
